Project Information

The study involves evaluating alternatives for the widening and extension of Lennard Road from Walton Road north to US 1, in St. Lucie County, Florida. The proposed roadway will be a four-lane section from Walton Road to Savanna Club Boulevard and a two-lane section from Savanna Club Boulevard to US 1. Within the limits of this project, Lennard Road is currently a rural, two-lane, undivided, local collector that extends due north for approximately 3,350 feet from the Walton Road intersection and ends at a cul-de-sac in front of Port St. Lucie High School.  In addition, there is a disconnected rural, two-lane, undivided section of Lennard Road that extends approximately 1,700 feet south of the Kitterman Road intersection that currently serves as the single access route to Savanna Ridge Elementary School. The Florida Department of Transportation, in cooperation with St. Lucie County, is studying the need for and feasibility of constructing Lennard Road from Walton Road to US 1 to satisfy projected traffic demands in the area.

The initial establishment of the corridor was predominantly driven by the right-of-way that the County currently has in place and is referred to herein as the Tilton Road Corridor. Through extensive community involvement, data collection and analysis, a second and third alternative were introduced. These alternatives are called Dyer Road Corridor and Silver Oak Corridor respectively. Based on further review, it was determined by St. Lucie County that the Silver Oak Corridor was the preferred corridor and was analyzed further during the PD&E Study.

The project corridor is divided into the following segments for analysis.

  • Segment 1, illustrated in “blue”, includes the reconstruction of the existing Lennard Road segment from Walton Road to Port St. Lucie High School; and new construction from Port St. Lucie High School to the intersection of Savanna Club Boulevard.
  • Segment 2, illustrated in “red”, includes new construction from Savanna Club Boulevard to Tilton Road utilizing portions of right-of-way along Dyer Road and Silver Oak Drive and connecting to the St. Lucie County MSBU project.
  • The MSBU project, illustrated in “white” (dashed line), includes an approximately one-mile section that extends from Silver Oak Drive to Kitterman Road.
  • Segment 3, illustrated in “yellow”, includes new construction that begins at the northern terminus of the MSBU project at Kitterman Road and continues to a point along US 1.
  • The Buchanan Connection, illustrated in “purple”, is an urban two-lane roadway that connects Lennard Road to Easy Street, via an extension of Buchanan Drive.

Segment 1 is being evaluated as an urban four-lane divided typical section from Walton Road to Savanna Club Boulevard. Segments 2 & 3 are being evaluated as variations of a two-lane section. The Buchanan Connection is evaluated as an urban two-lane roadway and the MSBU project is evaluated as a rural two-lane roadway. Multiple typical section alternatives were evaluated for Segments 2 and 3.

A formal Public Hearing was held on June 28, 2007 at the Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Florida. The PD&E Study is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.
